Data Story – Population Density & Marriage

This visual is the output of work to identify factors that may impact the age of marriage. The original hypothesis of this data was that cost of living played an important role in when people choose to get married. However, after finding minimal correlations between the cost of living and population to the age at which people do get married my third hypothesis had much better results. I found a much higher correlation between population density and the age of marriage.

Using data from online sources we learn some of the following bits of information.

The data contains 50 records for 50 states. A cursory look at the data reveals the following:

  • The average age of marriage across the US is 27.3, for men 28.1 and women is 26.4
  • The state with the highest average age of marriage is Connecticut with an average age of 30
  • The state with the lowest average age of marriage is Utah with an average age of marriage of 24.5
  • The most densely populated state is New Jersey with 1,210 people per square mile
  • The least densely populated state is Alaska at 1.30 people per square mile
  • Hawaii’s cost of living index is 193 or 93% more costly than average and is the highest cost of living in the US
  • Mississippi’s cost of living index is 86 or 14% less than the US average and is the lowest cost of living in the US
